Canlaon City Pasayaw Dance Company represents the Philippines on an International Stage

Hong Kong is set to welcome the Year of the Snake with the much-anticipated Cathay International Chinese New Year Night Parade, and this year, Filipino pride will take center stage. Representing the Philippines in this grand celebration is the renowned Canlaon City Pasayaw Dance Company, bringing their unique cultural flair and vibrant energy to Tsim Sha Tsui on January 29, 2025.

Organized by the Hong Kong Tourism Board (HKTB) with Cathay as the title sponsor for the 23rd consecutive year, the parade’s theme, Unfold a Year of Good Fortune, celebrates Hong Kong’s position as a global hub for world-class festivities. The event will feature an impressive lineup of local and international performers alongside dazzling floats that capture the city’s unique charm and festive spirit.

A Global Platform for Filipino Culture

The Canlaon City Pasayaw Dance Company, hailing from Negros Oriental, has long captivated audiences with their dynamic performances that showcase the rich traditions of Filipino festivals. Their inclusion in this prestigious event reflects the Philippines’ cultural strength on the global stage.

For the group, this marks not just an opportunity to represent their hometown but also to share the beauty of Filipino culture with a worldwide audience. Speaking about their participation, Seth Bariga of Canlaon Group shared, “We are honored to represent Canlaon City, Philippines, at such a prestigious international event. Performing alongside groups from all over the world inspires us to bring our best and show the world the joy and passion of Filipino festivals.” Bariga shared how the recent volcanic eruption and ongoing activities tested their resilience but also highlighted the strength of their community. “Despite the challenges brought about by the recent volcanic eruption, and the ongoing volcanic activities, we stand proud and resilient. This performance is not just a showcase of our talent but also a testament to the strength and determination of the people of Canlaon. We look forward to meeting other performers, sharing our stories, and being part of this incredible celebration in Hong Kong,” he added.

The Pasayaw Dance Company will join 55 local and international performing groups, showcasing talent from 14 countries and regions. This year’s parade promises to be bigger and brighter, with over nine floats and pre-parade performances featuring juggling acts, magic shows, and music, setting the stage for a lively Lunar New Year celebration.

Festivities in Every Corner

Spectators can expect an unforgettable spectacle as the parade winds its way through Canton Road, Haiphong Road, and Nathan Road, with the iconic floats doubling as ambassadors for Hong Kong’s unique charm and festivities. For Filipinos in Hong Kong and those tuning in via Discover Hong Kong’s YouTube channel livestream, this is a proud moment to celebrate a shared cultural heritage.

After the parade, the celebration continues as some of the dazzling floats and performances, including international groups, will travel to Lam Tsuen’s Wishing Square from January 30 to February 13. This partnership between HKTB and the Hong Kong Well-Wishing Festival ensures that locals and visitors alike can experience the magic of the Lunar New Year beyond the parade.
